John Nieto is one of America’s most dynamic contemporary artists, concentrating on themes that transcend mere representation. He utilizes intense primary colors, applied in bold strokes to give dimension and character to the canvas. In all of Nieto’s art, sensitivity and respect for his subject are projected. He concentrates on capturing in his work his unique vision of the subjects he paints on canvases of vibrant, electric hues. The bold imagery of Nieto’s dynamic style is the essence of his art through which he seeks to evoke a reaction or response from the viewer. His art is a synthesis of his philosophy and his technical versatility, a powerful expression of pride and vitality. Nieto is unique among contemporary American artists. His personal philosophies are a vital element of his consummate style. Nieto states, “I employ a subject matter that is familiar and express it the way I see it”.

Woody was born in Lexington, OK and was orphaned at a young age due to the death of his parents. He was taken in by various Native American families in the Sand Springs, OK area and attended school there. When he was 17, he began studying art at the Chilocco Indian Agricultrual school, where he also learned to play the ceremonial wooden flute.  During his art studies, he supported himself financially by touring the U.S. as a Native American dancer and sold his artwork during his travels. He curated a collection of Native American art at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK. They later used his Peyote Bird painting as the museum logo.

Anatoly Purlik, Russian Artist, was born September 12, 1956 in Taishet. From 1972 to 1976 he studied at the Art Department Pedagogical College, where he first showed his work at personal exhibitions. In 1984 he graduated from the graphic arts department of the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute. Alexander Herzen (St. Petersburg). Since 1982, the active set to Russia and abroad as a painter. Member of the Artists Union of Russia, the Moscow Union of Artists since 1994. Lives and works in Moscow.

Married 10/13/1876 to Petra Elise Sophie Charlotte Diechmann, Born 10/4/1848 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Died 3/20/1926, Daughter of a teacher, later parish preacher in Stubbekøbing Hans Anthon Severin Lobedanz D. and Elise Cathrine Bjerring.

Howard Terpning

Terpning was born in Illinois, November 5, 1927. His mother was an interior decorator, and his father worked for the railroad. He grew up in the Midwest living in Iowa, Missouri and Texas as well as Illinois. As a boy he liked to draw and knew by the age of seven that he wanted to be an artist. At age 15, he became fascinated with the West and Native Americans when he spent the summer camping and fishing with a cousin near Duango, Colorado. In 1967 in the midst of his commercial art career Terpning left his home in Connecticut and headed to Vietnam as a civilian combat artist. Invited by the Marine Corps to document the war by living with the Marines for one month. Of the experience Terpning stated he was “profoundly changed” by the experience. Upon his return home he created six paintings which are now at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Terpning’s choice of palette is typically restrained in order to ensure that narrative is the first impression imparted upon a viewer. He is among a very small group of painters of the West in the late 20th century whose art will still be hanging in museums and appreciated a hundred years from now.

Russian/American Artist

From 1930 until his death in 1984 Nahum Tschacbasov was a uniquely transformative artist. Inspired by varying influences during the course of his life Tschacbasov’s work was in a constant state of metamorphosis, as he developed new techniques and mined new perspectives. Highly successful and in great demand during his lifetime, spoken of and exhibited with Picasso and Calder, Tschacbasov is one of the sleeping giants of the contemporary art world.

The canvases of Russian-born artist Nahum Tschacbasov are filled with familiar themes — quasi-religious imagery, romantic landscapes, not-so-subtle references to being an artist. With brushstrokes reminiscent of Peter Doig and ghostly figures that echo Picasso’s, the paintings evoke a pleasant feeling of deja-vu.

Most art admirers are probably unaware of the Tschacbasov’s prominence in the United States– maybe it’s the extremely Russian-sounding name. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan (a territory of Russia back in 1899), Mr. Tschacbasov dominated the New York art world from the 1930s to the 1950s, displaying his intricate, symbol-laden works in the halls of art havens like the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum. He painted alongside Mark Rothko in the Dissenters Ten, formed his own fine arts school in Woodstock and even threw his expertise into the teaching academy of the Art Students League.

Jesus Rivera was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba in 1956 and immigrated to the United States in 1995. His work centers on social subject-matters, exploring these concepts through a system of personal symbols such as houses, hearts, and windows. His diverse range of media include large-format paintings, sculpture, and utilitarian implements. Rivera’s work has also been exhibited in galleries in New York and Miami and is collected internationally.

Worked in Rome on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1958 and at the American Academy in 1963. Received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1962 and a Copley Foundation grant in 1969. Received a Cassandra Foundation grant in 1973. Over the years, Rosofsky taught at Wright Junior College, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of California at Santa Cruz, Northwestern University and the Blackhawk Mountain School of Art. Solo and group exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Chicago, Northwestern University and the Chicago Cultural Center.

As a child, Aiden Lassell Ripley was interested in both music and art. Although he was a talented pianist and tuba player, he decided to study Art in Boston. He joined the Army during World War I and served as an infantryman and in the military band. After his discharge Ripley returned to New England to study Fine Arts where he specialized in landscapes. In 1924, he received a fellowship to travel to France, the Netherlands, and North Africa for two years. After his return, landscape and portraiture sales suffered during the Great Depression. Ripley adapted to the situation as a painter of sporting scenes. He worked mainly in watercolor but also in oil, etching, and drypoint. He continued to focus on images of game birds and sporting scenes for the remainder of his artistic career but also created portraits and historical works on commission.

Creator of multiple shapes, diverse compositions rich in fantastic figures and elements, he uses and appropriates these to reflect the society that surrounds him. His island, as witness to time, has made him into a narrator and interpreter. Complex backgrounds invite this Cuban painter to come and show his colourful mastery and chromatic diversity. His works have become an obligatory reference point in the development of Cuban fine arts, for all art critics and fine arts historians. In recognition of his development as a creator he was awarded the National Prize for Fine Arts in 2006.

After refugeeing from Pless to Breslau in 1921, he enrolled at the Breslau Art Academy in 1928, where he attended the master classes taught by Otto Mueller. After the war years and moving from place to place, Friedlaender and his wife settled in Paris as political refugees in 1937, where Friedlaender showed his etchings at ‘L’quipe’ and ‘Matières et Formes’, groups headed by Gaston Diehl. The war made Friedlaender leave Paris but he returned in 1945. He worked for various journals and concentrated on etching as his main medium of expression but continued to do some watercolours. In 1948 Friedlaender went to Denmark, where he had exhibitions, including one at the Birch Gallery in Copenhagen, which was followed by others. Friedlaender was one of the great inventors in coloured printmaking. A school formed in Paris round his work as a painter and printmaker and his coloured etchings were internationally aclaimed. In 1992 Johnny Friedlaender died in Paris, where he had spent most of his adult life.

CornWell was a cartoonist at 18 for Louisville Herald. In 1927 began a five-year period of mural painting in California including the Los Angeles Public Library and the Lincoln Memorial Shrine in Redlands. Other murals: Rockefeller Center, Bethlehem Steel, New York’s General Motors Building, 1939 World’s Fair.
In 1959, he was inducted into the Society of Illustrator’s Hall of Fame. He had been nicknamed “The Dean of Illustrators” by his peers.

“My hands were too soft.. I had to find some special occupation, some kind of work that would not force me to turn away from the sky and the stars, that would allow me to discover the meaning of life.” – Marc Chagall

Born in Russia, Chagall moved to France in 1910. Marc Chagall’s poetic, figurative style made him one of most popular modern artists, while his long life and varied output made him one of the most internationally recognized. While many of his peers pursued ambitious experiments that led often to abstraction, Chagall’s distinction lies in his steady faith in the power of figurative art, one that he maintained despite absorbing ideas from Fauvism and Cubism. Later he spent time in the United States and the Middle East, travels which reaffirmed his self-image as an archetypal “wandering Jew.” Chagall’s Jewish identity was important to him throughout his life, and much of his work can be described as an attempt to reconcile old Jewish traditions with styles of modernist art. However, he also occasionally drew on Christian themes, which appealed to his taste for narrative and allegory.

Juan BOZA Sanchez

Boza was born in Camaguey, Cuba in 1941. He was a gay Afro Cuban artist specializing in painting, drawing, engraving and graphic design. His prints are fluid and confident. He moved to Havana in 1959 in order to study at San Alejandro. He was expelled from San Alejandro due to “political issues” and became a lithographer in 1965. Boza was fired as a result of the Congress of Education and Culture which convened in 1971 and led to the censorship of many artists in Cuba. In the years between 1971 and his exodus from Cuba in 1980 Boza restored religious statues to earn a living. In 1980 Juan Boza managed to escape Cuba to New York via the Mariel boatlift. Boza described New York as a “tremendous shock” and upon arriving in New York “had to re-build Juan Boza from scratch.” Boza began developing an Afro-Cuban theme that he realized was part of his culture after leaving Cuba. Mario Luis Diaz Bencomo was born on July 26, 1953 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. As a youth he was sent alone by his parents to live in Spain. At the age of 14, he left Madrid for the U.S., arriving by himself in New York City in 1968. He often returns to Europe, and for regular stays in Montreal, Canada also. In 1996 he returned to Cuba for the first time, three decades after he left, and visiting Cuba periodically since then. He works in both Miami and Montreal.
His work represents myth of forms found in the natural world, literature, poetry, art history and personal experience; often blurring the line between the spiritual from the sensual.

Artist, Alexander Sizov is born in Russia and his paintings are mainly in the Realistic-Impressionist style. A sense of dynamics, movement, and color dominates Alexander’s work. Having close contact to the cultures of Cuba, Peru, and Guinea-Bissau, his artistic style was significantly influenced. His earlier works have been exposed in numerous school art exhibitions and on national television. In 1975, he graduated from the Moscow School of Arts with the qualification of an artist designer. At the same time, he studied at the renowned Art Studio of Grekov and Stroganoff Academy of the Arts in Moscow. After receiving a Masters Degree in Moscow in 1981, his travels led him to create original works of art appreciated by collectors worldwide

The creative coordinates of Pedro Vizcaíno’s art stem from the late 1980s era. The explosion of the Volumen I exhibition and the subsequent emergence of a “Cuban avant-garde theory” steeped in the contributions of Western postmodern thought—boldly defying official cultural models from the Eastern Bloc—as well as the rise of a new model of art education around the workshops of the Instituto Superior de Arte, brought about a gradual but permanent change (not without its own contradictions) in the paradigms of Cuban art. All of these directly influenced the artist’s métier. “Doomed” to discover international art in the glossy pages of art magazines and old slides from History of Art courses, Vizcaíno transmuted his inability to travel and lack of first-hand access to key artworks into a critical, ironic distance from the traditions of art. Vizcaíno used characters borrowed from American and Cuban comics, imbibed (from books) New York graffiti of the 1970s that had been praised by Norman Mailer, and chose as authoritative sources such contemporary figures as Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring, and Jonathan Borofsky, as well as German Neo-Expressionism and Pop artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Ray Johnson. He distilled these sources through his peculiar Neo-Expressionistic temperament and his urgent need to express the convulsed dynamics of a reality both internal and external. —Abelardo G. Born in Havana in 1928, began his studies at the Academy Villate and founded by a group of artists, the Group of Eleven, in 1953, to find innovative means a more contemporary expression to break with everything that preceded them, wanting to do something different and to be distinguished in Cuban art.
His first exhibition took place in 1952 with his contemporary Guido Llinás, Manuel Vidal Antonia Eiriz and in the halls of the CTC.
In the 60s he founded the Taller Experimental de Grafica, an experience that allowed him to develop a wide range of his work within the lithographic technique. In the years presented in the VI Bienal de Sao Paulo and Mexico Biennial II

Luis was born in 1966 and grew up in the village of Mella, about an hour outside of Cuba’s second city, Santiago de Cuba. His father, whose paintings also form part of this exhibit, started El Grupo Bayate, a collective of self-taught artists living in Mella, in 1994. Many of the artists have become well-known in the world of folk art, especially Luis, who continues to sign his paintings “El Estudiante” in deference to his father, whom he considers his teacher, “El Maestro.” Today, Luis Jr. is the only member of the collective who lives outside of Mella. When he married Luisa Maria Ramirez, an art critic and El Grupo Bayate’s chronicler and promoter, he moved into her family home in Santiago, where they live with Luisa’s parents, Mercedes and Ignacio, and their four-year-old son, Luisito.
Luis has exhibited widely, and in 1997 he and Luisa came to the United States for two shows of El Grupo Bayate’s work, one at the Southside Gallery in Oxford, Mississippi, the other at an exhibit sponsored by the Center for Cuban Studies at the Metropolitan Arts Center. Luis’ work was featured in a June 2002 article by Annette Grant in The New York Times (“Ebullient Cubans Make a Lot Out of a Little”) in which she noted, “the Grupo paints in a naive, narrative style and takes rural life as its subject. The work of the Rodriguezes is riotously colorful and stacked like a rush-hour train.”

Something strange happens when Carlos Quintana paints. He goes into a meditative state not unlike that of Sufi Dervishes who spin round and round until they reach a state of bliss. Quintana, though, reaches a different kind of place, a place where an act of mischief is magically transformed into an eloquent work of art. But magic is only one part of the process. “[Painting] is something physical for me,” he tells Havana Cultura, “with violent movements, effort, truth…”
Quintana paints on giant surfaces, turning his canvasses upside-down as if to free his paint to drip in new directions. He spreads the paint with his hands. He dilutes colours with turpentine or with his own saliva. “Sometimes I even piss on my paintings,” he says, “so, yes, I interact with them in different ways.”

Clara Morera was born on July 21, 1944 in Cuba. She studied at the National School of Visual Arts and graduated from the San Alejandro Academy with a focus in painting, tapestry, soft sculpture, drawing, and multimedia installations. She has exhibited in many public collections, including: the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana in 1970, the Cuban Cultural House in Prague in 1980, the Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C. in 1992, the Discovery Museum in Connecticut in 1998, and The Rye Art Center in New York in 2000. The artist currently resides in New York City.

Raul Milian

Raúl Milián was born in Havana, in 1914. He was an autodidact. His work has appeared in biennials of Venetia and Sao Paulo, as well as at the University of Vermont (1953), University of Havana (1955), and Toronto (1956). He has traveled through all Europe and EEUU. His paintings can be seen at private permanent collections from the following museums: Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana; Museo de Arte Moderno, Sao Paulo; Museo de Arte Moderno, Rio de Janeiro; Museo de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires; Museum of Modern Arts, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; of Fine Arts, Houston, and many more.
Well educated and passionate, Milian started painting in 1952 and never worked with oils. Exploring qualities of water based inks, he has provoked unforgettable moments for those who contemplate his works. His paintings reflect the internal struggle of a man with extreme sensibility in a world torn with violence.

The son of a carpenter and a visual arts teacher who rigorously taught him his first notions about drawing. By 2001, Kcho was already a champion in the “heavyweight division” of Cuban artists, with works exhibited in important museums and collections worldwide. His incessant production of sculptures, drawings, engravings, and even jewelry traverses a steady repertory of imagery: boats and rafts, oars and propellers, mobiles, infinite columns, docks, unorthodox assemblages. The artistic career of this Isle of Pines native seems to be driven exclusively by his inner need for expression, on principles that he apparently shares with Amelia Peláez, a modern Cuban artist from the past century: “She moved towards the future, but constantly looked for references in her own past; time and again, she would take up motifs or approaches she had not exhausted, and include them in the dominant direction of her work, which could then turn into an all-encompassing spiral, or veer off in a sort of momentary arabesque, only to return afterwards, enriched, to its primary course…

He was born March 3, 1957 in Havana, Cuba. He is a Cuban artist specializing in painting, drawing, sculpture, collages, and photography. Since 1993 he has resided in Miami, Florida.
Ruben Torres Llorca’s piece “Without news from Havana” , portrays Bette Davis as a reference to the havana from the 50’s and since then, there are no news from the havana of those times. Those who left first, haven’t heard from the havana they left …..In the black circles there are the names of the different neighborhoods from havana that are popular.
During his trip to Mexico in 1985, Torres Llorca was so impressed by the country’s Baroque architecture and traditional arts and crafts that his later works focused on sculptures of vast spatial conception, intended as an emphatically anthropological communication with the viewer.

Fabelo juxtaposes the naturalistic depiction of characters with their staged and compact placement on a sofa or behind theatrical curtains. His deft hand captures each character in a defining gesture or attitude, and clothes him or her in a way that reveals the individual’s own psychology. The realistic appearance of those beings suggests that the artist is like a hunter of faces, stalking his prey in the corners of Havana. But this humanity—genetically tainted by tropical animals and fruits, deities, shy mermaids, feathered heads—is a faithful reflection of his imagination. Clustered on a sofa or gathered around props in an empty theater, his characters wait in awe for an event that will never happen. They seldom look at or talk to each other, and even the dogs share the same baleful glare as their owners. The juicy, Rubenesque nudes do not inspire lust or competition, but only add to the strangeness of the situation.

Roberto Estopinan

Roberto Estopiñán, a sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker, was born in Camaguey, Cuba on March 18, 1921. In 1961, the artist moved to New York, where he resided until 2002. Since the 1980s, he has been involved with the female torso as his favorite expressive form. The artist recently retired to Miami, FL.
Estopiñán has always been on a quest for a pure, essential form that he can load with content. He best demonstrates this quest with the obsessive use he has made of the female torso as his subject since 1978. This is an iconic subject found behind many manifestations of Western art, and of other arts as well. There are hundreds of variations on this theme in the hands of Estopiñán alone, but no two of them are alike. He revises, adds, subtracts, and transforms this essential female form in countless ways.”

Born in 1963, Esson is one of the most painterly artists of his generation. His work exudes his pleasure in painting; however, his subject matter denies the pleasurable, hedonistic surface. His images have caused great scandal and controversy in Cuba. He now lives in the U.S. and exhibits internationally. Esson’s paintings are grotesque. His painting is strong enough to give his creatures a presence in their own right, devoid of illustrative references and weaknesses. His beings seem to live in mythical primogenital time.

Nelson Dominguez

Nelson Domínguez was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1947. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Arte Cubanacán from 1965 to 1970, and later became a Professor at the same school until 1985. He has been a Professor and Chair of the Painting Department at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), where he has headed a group of professors specialized in engraving. He is a member of the UNEAC and the International Association of Visual Artists (AIAP).
Domínguez has been lauded with various Cuban national awards, including a 1984 prize bestowed by the Alejo Carpentier Cultural Promotion Center in Havana, Cuba. He has also garnered international awards and recognition in France, Bulgaria, Spain, the former Czechoslovakia, and Japan among others. Domínguez has been given more than 20 personal exhibitions. His works are collected by important museums and cultural institutions world wide. The artist lives and works in Havana, Cuba.

Zaida del Rio, painter, drawer, illustrator, engraver, ceramic decorator, mural painter and poet. Born in Guadalupe, Las Villas, Cuba, on June 3, 1954. Illustrations holding a singular expression decorate diverse books, magazines and compact discs; she also publishes her book ”Herencia Clásica”, making versions and different interpretations to popular religious prays. Her paintings are exhibited at state and private collections in Cuba and abroad, also at the National Fine Arts Museum, decorating prestigious places, such as hotels, galleries and theatrical actions.

Jose Luis Cuevas, Mexican artist, was born in Mexico City in 1934. He was influenced, paying homage to his favorite painters and writers, in numerous drawings and prints. Cuevas has claimed that his drawings portray the solitude and isolation of contemporary man and his inability to communicate. His work was influenced by the art of Goya and Picasso as well as graphic artist, Posada and painter, Orozco, whose genre represented deformed creatures, degraded humanity as well as prostitutes. It is for this reason that he distorts and transforms the human form to the point of uniqueness.

Yuniel Espinosa Castro

Born in1983, Artemisa, Cuba.
He is a Cuban contemporary artist and Art Professor in his country. He graduated with high honors of Licentiate in Education, Specialty: Plastic Arts Education at The Higher Pedagogic Institute “Enrique Jose Varona” in 2006. In the same year he began his work as a teacher of Art History in the school of “Instructors Art” of Havana Province. Yuniel also imparted art classes to children of middle school level in several schools of the Havana City. In 2007 he moved to The United States.
